Cocktails ‘N Stilettos — Bourbon Cider Twist

BourbonCider-Final
A few weeks ago, I went to the Atlantic City Wine & Food Festival for Sunny Anderson’s Sunset Sliders event. It was a gorgeous evening poolside on the rooftop deck of Caesars with a perfect shore breeze and various nibbles and cocktails to try. I had a blast catching up with One Curly Fry’s Jen, Megan from This Girl Can Eat and, of course, Ms. Sunny and was intrigued with this Bourbon Cider Twist cocktail which was one of the featured cocktails.  Now – let me state for the record that I don’t drink bourbon often. I cook with it more than sip it. I’m more of a rum gal, but man did this cocktail make a convert out of me.

This week, Sunny showcased the cocktail on a recent ep of Cooking for Real and I had to try it. It’s no big secret that things at home with the munchkin have been quite “interesting” to say the least and I’ve been feeling more like a vet tech than I should. However, after coming home last night to one of Wiggy’s famous “temper tantrums” where he decided that a pair of slippers should meet their demise, I knew a cocktail was in order.

I grabbed the Makers’ Mark, some cider and some lime and *poof* this worked out wonderfully. I have to confess, I added more cider than required because I clearly haven’t built up my bourbon tolerance. This is a PERFECT fall cocktail and will be one that I use for entertaining as well.  The pug, of course, hears “APPLES” and then decided that it was time to be BFFs yet again (not that he can have them, but he still tries).

Add A Dash of Hollywood Glamour With An Oscar Themed Cocktail

white_lady-Black-Swan.jpg

There’s something magical about the Oscars (and no, not a what the heck will James Franco do now type of amazement).  Sadly, the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival often conflicts with the Oscars and I won’t be able to partake in an Oscar parties that are around Philly.  However, should you be looking for a little cocktail inspiration for your soiree tonight, check out these dreamy libations courtesy of the fab gals over at Nike Communications.

Natalie Portman gave a stirring performance in this year’s psychological thriller, The Black Swan.  Mimic her  her transformation from the White Swan to the Dark Swan in a cocktail.

If you adore Facebook and loved the movie The Social Network, well then you MUST try the All-Nighter created by Boston mixologist, Scott Marshall of Drink.  Scott – you had me at the mere mention of coffee!

The one movie I MUST see this year is The Fighter.  Mark Wahlberg has transitioned nicely from hip hop artist to consummate actor.  I know whatever movie he is in will be a good one (well, besides Planet of the Apes but we won’t discuss that!).  Check out this cocktail inspired by Mark & Christian Bale’s stirring performances

Fab Friday — Cooking In Stilettos Holiday Edition

Can you believe the holidays are upon us? I don’t even know where this year went and already it’s the first week of December!  As holiday entertaining is the focus, I decided to feature some fabulous products that will make your holiday entertaining have that *Wow* factor…

1.  EVERY hostess needs a fabulous pair of booties and you must check out these Elizabeth and James Metal-Overlay Suede Ankle Boots. They have that 80s retro mesh but with such a modern look, they just scream edgy chic!

2.  When I saw this Dual-Spigot Beverage Server with Metal Base from Colin Cowie that just launched for the holiday season, you would have thought I found a new pair of Loubous.  Talk about love at first sight.  I have gifted his beverage servers to friends and swear by them myself. To have one that serves TWO cocktails instead of one – now that is a MUST HAVE!

3.  Holiday parties means breaking out platters and serving dishes. I’ve amassed quite a collection over the years but always love to find ones that have that za za zu factor. For a touch of whimsy, check out Williams-Sonoma’s Party Etiquette Platter – so festive & cute with the retro look!

4.   One valuable lesson that I learned from Colin is that one MUST have votives everywhere while entertaining. Everyone looks amazing in candlelight, no? Well, rather than break the bank, check out this Jeweled-Glass Votive Candle Holder from Sur La Table. The colors for their holiday table collection will give your party that glamorous touch.

5.  Finally, one holiday entertaining cookbook that must be in your collection is Williams-Sonoma Holiday Entertaining. Two words – Peppermint Mojito? Thought that would garner your attention.

VIDEO: Daisy Martinez Kicks Off The Holidays With A Fab Cocktail

Earlier this week, both Jen from One Curly Fry and I attended Philadelphia’s Inaugural “Festival of Trees” at XIX and the one and only Daisy Martinez was in attendance to auction fabulously decorated holiday trees to benefit the Philadelphia Orchestra. I have to say, these trees were so gorgeous, even my fave designer, Colin Cowie, would have been pleased. Talk about getting one into the holiday spirit. I will post more on the event after the holiday but I wanted to leave you with a little holiday “cocktail” courtesy of La Daisy from her latest book, Daisy’s Holiday Cooking: Delicious Latin Recipes for Effortless Entertaining VIDEO: Daisy Martinez Kicks Off The Holidays With A Fab Cocktail.   After all, every great holiday starts off with a fabulous cocktail, right?

Enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Cinco De Mayo, Skinnygirl Style…

Yes, I admit it – my name is Lys and I watch Bravo’s Real Housewives.  What can I say – it’s a guilty pleasure for many.  I, personally, enjoyed the NY season and I am looking forward to all points Jersey (but hello – why not Real Housewives of Philadelphia – Bravo, take note! We’ve got Main Line, Manayunk, Rittenhouse, etc.) However, I digress.

One of the characters that was enjoyable this season was Bethenny Frankel, the natural foods chef and owner of BethennyBakes and Skinnygirl Cocktails. We’ll have a review of her book Naturally Thinin the next week or so (with giveaway so stay tuned) but, since it IS Cinco de Mayo, one needs a margarita to celebrate properly, no?

I, for one, will be trying the Skinnygirl Margarita. No more pre-blended mixes for me. This one looks super simple and, quite frankly, to have a margarita that is not packing on a walloping 740 calories a serving, is even better in my book.

Check out the recipe below for the standard Skinnygirl Margarita as she is often drinking on the show…

Gift Idea: Penguin Sparkling Water Maker…

penguinsparklingwatermaker

ws penguinsparklingwatermaker 150x150 Gift Idea: Penguin Sparkling Water Maker...While doing a little retail R&R this weekend, you know this gal HAD to go to Williams Sonoma, right?  First of all, if you have the chance to go on a weekend, go.  The smells in there were amazing!  They did some demos on Sunday and were showing their Meyer Lemon Quick Bread but I digress.

They had on display the Penguin Sparkling Water Maker which is essentially a water carbonator.  I have to say, I’m a fan of the occasional bubbly water and soda.  Not to mention, sparkling water is a must when I have cocktail parties.  So, would I use this – probably more than I care to admit.  I’ve been quite paranoid lately with all that I’ve read online re: soda, additives, etc. and to think that I could possibly make my own citrus libation and know exactly what goes in it – SOLD

From the Williams Sonoma website:

Adding effervescence to holiday festivities, this eco-friendly soda charger quickly transforms ordinary tap water into fresh sparkling water. Enjoy it on its own or as the base for cocktails or homemade sodas. It’s fun and easy to use: Simply fill the reusable glass carafe with water, insert it into the Penguin and press the carbonating “beak.” You can customize carbonation so each batch has just the right amount of fizz. Freshly charged seltzer water is a green alternative to its store-bought counterparts. Conserving energy and resources, it eliminates the need for plastic bottles – along with the environmental impacts associated with shipping and shopping for bottled water – and no batteries or electricity are required.

While the price is a bit steep *cough cough*  I wouldn’t be adverse to it if it saves money and energy in the long run.  Paying it forward, one glass at a time.

My Favorite Cocktail: The Cable Car Martini…

cablecar My Favorite Cocktail: The Cable Car Martini...In Las Vegas, when I went there with Meowmix a couple years ago, I fell in love – truly, madly and deeply – with a cocktail: The Cable Car Martini.

We stayed at the MGM and that is where Cable Car and I began our torrid affair. Now, as many know, I am also a Captain Morgan aficionado. So if you give me a martini where the primary ingredient is Captain Morgan, I’m a VERY happy gal.
So, if you are a lover of all things rum and out of the box, why not give it a try…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ingredients:
1½ ounce (or 2 oz.) Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
¾ ounce Orange Curacao (or 1 oz. Cointreau)
½ ounce Fresh Sweet and Sour or Fresh Lemon juice.
For the Rim:
Cinnamon
Sugar
Orange Peel for garnish
In an ice filled mixing glass, add the above ingredients, shake until well blended.
Strain into a Martini glass that has a “caramelized rim” of raw sugar and cinnamon.
Serve with a garnish of an orange spiral.
*To rim the glass, moisten the edge of the glass with a lemon wedge, dip the glass into the mixture of cinnamon sugar and let dry for 3–5 min while you mix the cocktail.
Also – you might have to add a bit more Captain Morgan to taste.
