Fab Friday — Thanksgiving Edition

Ok – where does the time go?  One minute I’m turning 40 – the next, it’s almost Thanksgiving! I’m in the midst of gathering recipes that might be gracing my holiday table but figured I’d take a little time out for some eye candy.

x Fab Friday Thanksgiving Edition

I tend to go casual for Thanksgiving and, if I planned ahead, I might have gotten these chic Kate Spade New York Kirkland Leather Chain Ankle Boots instead of the Pour La Victoire Larkins that I bought and had to send back because they just didn’t look right.

With turkey day fast approaching, I think I should break out this Ruffoni Copper Gratin Pan. I’m planning on making Virginia Willis’ Brussel Sprouts from her fab new cookbook, Basic to Brilliant, Y’all: 150 Refined Southern Recipes and Ways to Dress Them Up for Company Fab Friday Thanksgiving Edition. This pan would provide the PERFECT presentation!

Harvest Pumpkin Bread will most likely be made for the holiday – it’s the only time I can really break out this lovely Nordic Ware Pumpkin Patch pan. I have had it for years and it holds up well.

Regarding the potatoes – I’m still debating on either an OXO Food Mill v. an OXO Potato Ricer – what do you think?

I have been perusing Martha’s Entertaining: A Year of Celebrations Fab Friday Thanksgiving Edition in the bookstores and there is the strong likelihood I might just pick it up at Amazon for a little entertaining inspiration because, if anyone can put together a great table, its Ms. Martha Stewart. There is NO way I’d pay full price in the bookstore tho – that’s $$$ that would come straight from the holiday grocery fund (or my severely depleted stiletto fund).

Are you ready for the holidays?

Stop the Insanity — Celebrity Cookbook Overload

CelebCookbooks-Rszd

Recently, I went into my local Barnes & Noble and was greeted with this sight that got me thinking…

CelebCookbooks Rszd Stop the Insanity Celebrity Cookbook Overload

Display of “Bestselling Cookbooks” in Barnes & Noble.

I never really noticed the plethora of “celebrity” cookbooks until recently. It seems like every celebrity not only must do their normal 9to9 (acting/singing/”reality show”/etc.) but they also must have a fashion line, a fragrance (or more in the case of a few celebs), a beauty line, a book and, if their agent/manager can finagle it, a cookbook followed by a food/drink line, cookware/bakeware/homewares line, and so on and so on.

I  would see the occasional celeb cookbook (and I use the term “celeb” loosely since I also am including reality stars in that mix) and I never really paid it any mind. Lately, it seems there is more celebrity cookbooks and I’m sorry – these individuals are not “celebrity chefs” no matter how much they try to utilize that moniker. However, the “definition of a celebrity chef” is a rant for another day. Also, I have to state for the record that I firmly believe that that are celebs that are passionate about cooking and actually practice what they preach (Ms. Patti Labelle is one that walks the walk and talks the talk – same with Ms. Dolly Parton and, of course, Cooking Channel’s Debi Mazar and Gabrielle Corcos who had a blog and online cooking show long before it was “trendy”) but this “discussion” isn’t about them because their recipes and actions speak volumes.

Recently a well known celebrity went on a national morning show to hawk their latest cookbook. During the demo, I noticed that this celeb didn’t appear to really know her own recipes or the stories behind it. It was then a lightbulb clicked in my recovering publicist mind – she must have had a ghostwriter or family member put it together. This celeb had a relative with her and that person caught the fumble and ran with it for a touchdown but I resolved then and there to NOT buy that specific cookbook nor review it and, technically, it also made me question that celebrity’s integrity because while she’s on there hawking this cookbook and saying she put her heart and soul into it, by all appearances, clearly she didn’t.

I totally get branding and endorsements but, if you collaborated with someone, be honest. Your fans and the audience would absolutely appreciate the transparency. This isn’t a one time situation – it seems to be a many time situation and she’s not the only celeb – many others are guilty of this as well. I won’t even address the whole “housewife” drama where they put out cookbooks one, after another, after another and the recipes not only leave much to be desired, but in the case of one of the book, as noticed by a dear friend, some of those “recipes” weren’t even written by that celeb but were taken from a well known cookbook with no credit, adaption, nada. (And, for the love of all things Julia Child, I have to say that if network suits give one of these housewives a cooking show instead of a talented chef or cook that knows their way around a kitchen, I’m really going to wonder what is wrong with the network and perhaps flip the channel – permanently)

I have heard time and time again about how celebrities use ghostwriters to write their novels, etc. and I’m sure that there are many recipe developers that were behind the making of a celebrity cookbook. The publishing company puts the celeb’s name on it and sales are high and all involved are happy. Does that make the celeb the next Martha? In my opinion, definitely not. Martha Stewart has a passion for cooking, entertaining, etc. and has built her media empire on it. The celebrity has a different legacy, in my opinion, and while I appreciate that some have the passion for it – many often don’t and see it as yet another revenue tool – courtesy of their agent/manager/etc. They go on promotional tours for this specific cookbook and, at the end of that media blitz, it’s over and onto the next branding opportunity. There is a lucrative business in branding – there’s no denying that. If you talk to many celebrity chefs, you will see that they have a clear plan – cookbooks, housewares, linens, etc. But those celebrity chefs also deliver, in my opinion, and many often utilize their own lines in their day to day dealings.

I’ll jump off my soapbox now before I get TOO ranty – but I’m curious to see what you think.

Are you YAY or NAY for Celebrity Cookbooks and would you purchase them before you purchased one from an actual food personality (whether it’s from OWN, Food Network, Cooking Channel, PBS, Bravo, etc.).

Fab Friday — New York City Wine and Food Festival Edition

One thing I’m looking forward to is a day of R&R in one of my favorite cities – The Big Apple. This year’s Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival is set up a bit differently in that the demos are at the Grand Tasting Tents so the likelihood of me running around the city like a chicken with my head cut off like last year is null and void. The tents are near one of my favorite happy places, Chelsea Market, and, if time allows, perhaps a quick jaunt to the store with a shoe floor that has its own zip code might be on the agenda.

x Fab Friday New York City Wine and Food Festival Edition

1. I’m on the fence between sassy flat and wedgy boot. However, in a perfect world, what I would LOVE to wear is this Tory Burch Lawson bootie. I’m a sucker for wool and lace up details.  I know I know – when it comes to shoes, I will never learn.

2. Well, I can say that I learned my lesson last time and, in addition to NOT wearing 4″ stiletto boots, I will also not be lugging anything super heavy – whether it be cookbooks, magazines, etc. until I’m heading home.   It’s bad enough that the dslr cameras are a bit hefty.   One must item to take is my lovely iPad to do some blogging and writing in my travels and this Rebecca Minkoff Touch And Go iPad Case Fab Friday New York City Wine and Food Festival Edition has been a lifesaver – chic and functional. I broke down and got the pink one but I will say that when I’m looking for my iPad among a slurry of books, binders and other items, I always can see the bright pink and smile.

Now – if only this gorgeous Jimmy Choo nude iPad case would be priced MUCH lower, I’d be a very happy stiletto wench. Sadly, it’s about the cost of a pair of stilettos *sigh* Oh well…

3. One of my must visit places is the Chelsea Market. Every time I head to the city, I drop by there to pick up a thing (or three) and I have definite plans on picking up some seriously delish pumpkin seed brittle from Jacques Torres, perusing the cookbooks at Posman Books, looking for intriguing cooking finds at Bowery Kitchen Supply and picking up this lovely Pembroke Salt Dish from Anthropologie for my Aleppo pepper.

4. One of the demos I’m excited about seeing is the Beekman Boys. They have a great cookbook, The Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook: Heirloom fruits and vegetables, and more than 100 heritage recipes to inspire every generation Fab Friday New York City Wine and Food Festival Edition, that is garnering quite the buzz. Amazon has it but it was a bit of a wait time on delivery.  Luckily for me this weekend, Barnes & Noble had copies prominently displayed and a copy immediately went home for the cookbook arsenal.  This is a cookbook that will be treasured – beautifully photographed with vintage notepad touches and the recipes – oh the recipes. We’re talking seasonal recipes that scream comfort such as Beer Braised Beef with Onion Dumplings, Harvest Beef Chili with Pumpkin and Beans, Orange Gingerbread with Bourbon Custard and Jumbleberry Pie. Seriously – get this cookbook because I promise you will cook from it often. These are recipes that I’m sure are “Polka Spot The Llama Approved”.

5. Finally, after the chaos of the day to day and all that’s gone on with the Sous Pug recently, I reached my exasperation point and made an executive decision – the hair needed to be chopped. I’m a serial cheater when it comes to hairstylists and always have been. When I went to SOBE, the ‘do was the result of last minute rushing to someone I didn’t know and, when I saw the photos, I winced. Also, knowing that I was cutting off a ton of hair, I didn’t want my fabulous friend Heather to be put into a position of dealing with my crazy “Cut. It. Off.” moments as I adore her too much. Looking at my packed schedule, I made a call to Manayunk’s own Salon L’Etoile and begged the gals to see if my favorite stylist there, Jeff, had an opening. Thankfully there was one spot left and thanks to Jeff’s very skilled scissors, the hair is short (well for me) and sassy and will do fine in NYC. Jeff accepted me back with open arms and he’s aware of my stylist commitment issues but never judges.  Seriously, if you are in Philly and need a fab salon that will spoil you rotten, check them (and him) out.

What do you have planned for the weekend?

Anne Burrell To Show Fans How To Cook Like A Rock Star

AnneBurrell-CookLikeARockStar

If you watched the Food Network’s Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, Worst Cooks in America and Iron Chef America, you already know that Chef Anne Burrell cooks like a rock star. For years she was Mario Batali’s right hand on Iron Chef, with recipes that would often secure the defeat of any challenger and they got it done in under an hour.  Since her show’s debut, Secrets of a Restaurant Chef  has taught viewers tips and techniques to make any dish fabulous and is a constant on my DVR.

Last year, during Food Network’s New York City Wine & Food Festival, I caught her demo and I learned so much in that one hour that I will never forget. One of Anne’s favorite takeaways is that black pepper brings a whole other flavor to the party so think before you season. Also, salt can be your friend, brown = flavor and so many tips and techniques that have vastly improved my cooking.  We won’t even get into the Louboutins that she was spotted wearing at events.  To quote Rachel Zoe – “I. Die.”

When Jen from One Curly Fry and I were visiting Sunny one day on set last spring, we had heard through the grapevine that Chef Anne Burrell’s first cookbook was in the testing stages and due to come out in the fall. I knew then that this was a book that had to be in my cookbook arsenal and referred to often. If I learned so much in one chef demo, imagine the plethora of info in her cookbook, right?

Well, the tour schedule for Cook Like a Rock Star: 125 Recipes, Lessons, and Culinary Secrets Anne Burrell To Show Fans How To Cook Like A Rock Star has been released and I am thrilled to see Chef Burrell is set to visit Philadelphia at, where else, my “happy place” – the Williams Sonoma in King of Prussia Mall on October 6, 2011. She will be signing copies of Cook Like a Rock Star Anne Burrell To Show Fans How To Cook Like A Rock Star beginning at noon.

Now, a gal has to wonder – will Chef Burrell be rocking the crocs or the Louboutins – we shall see.

Check out the schedule and see if she’s visiting a place near you!
