Fab Friday — Thanksgiving Edition

Ok – where does the time go?  One minute I’m turning 40 – the next, it’s almost Thanksgiving! I’m in the midst of gathering recipes that might be gracing my holiday table but figured I’d take a little time out for some eye candy.

x Fab Friday Thanksgiving Edition

I tend to go casual for Thanksgiving and, if I planned ahead, I might have gotten these chic Kate Spade New York Kirkland Leather Chain Ankle Boots instead of the Pour La Victoire Larkins that I bought and had to send back because they just didn’t look right.

With turkey day fast approaching, I think I should break out this Ruffoni Copper Gratin Pan. I’m planning on making Virginia Willis’ Brussel Sprouts from her fab new cookbook, Basic to Brilliant, Y’all: 150 Refined Southern Recipes and Ways to Dress Them Up for Company Fab Friday Thanksgiving Edition. This pan would provide the PERFECT presentation!

Harvest Pumpkin Bread will most likely be made for the holiday – it’s the only time I can really break out this lovely Nordic Ware Pumpkin Patch pan. I have had it for years and it holds up well.

Regarding the potatoes – I’m still debating on either an OXO Food Mill v. an OXO Potato Ricer – what do you think?

I have been perusing Martha’s Entertaining: A Year of Celebrations Fab Friday Thanksgiving Edition in the bookstores and there is the strong likelihood I might just pick it up at Amazon for a little entertaining inspiration because, if anyone can put together a great table, its Ms. Martha Stewart. There is NO way I’d pay full price in the bookstore tho – that’s $$$ that would come straight from the holiday grocery fund (or my severely depleted stiletto fund).

Are you ready for the holidays?

Obsessed With: Calphalon Contemporary Non-Stick Bronze Cookware

CalphalonNonStickBronze10PcSt

“Hi my name is Aly and I’m cookware obsessed…”

If you go into my kitchen, you will find not only my treasured Le Creuset pieces, but interspersed within that are pieces from Ingrid Hoffmann’s fab. Simply Delicioso line, some pieces from Cat Cora’s new collection, some Ruffoni copper pieces and, of course, my lovely Calphalon Contemporary Stainless Steel set which I totally blamed Ingrid on for using in her show Simply Delicioso eons ago. If those pieces didn’t look so stunning on the stove, I wouldn’t have stalked Rue La La to grab when I first moved to Philly.

Fab Friday — Hurricane Irene Edition

When I moved up north, it was the implied understanding that Mother Nature could send all the Nor’Easters, Snowmageddons and all that fun wintery crap with the agreement that I was never to deal with earthquakes or hurricanes ever again. Tropical storms – meh – they happen – but when both an earthquake and a hurricane impact Philadelphia within a week, I want the number of the fool here who irritated Mother Nature so badly she’s changing the scheme of the weather.

So – let’s jump to a few things that will make a gal happy, shall we?

x Fab Friday Hurricane Irene Edition

1. If you looked in my shoe arsenal, you would see I have a penchant for booties – especially lace up heeled ones like these Sam Edelman Rowin booties that are new for Fall 2011. Plus – with the impending flood warnings for Manayunk, well, the name is appropriate as well… *sigh*

2. I’ve decided that since Mother Nature is so insistent on making the houses rattle and roll, that perhaps I should look into investing in new dinnerware for when this weather drama is over. I will never forget Colin Cowie’s advice to use the “good dishes” just because – as he had lost some favorite pieces in a earthquake years ago. I’m over the moon about this Camden dinnerware from Crate and Barrel and plan on getting mix and match pieces in all three shades!

3. Whenever I see a mini-baker, I always think of Single Serving’s Manouschka.   This ruffled baker from Anthropologie is beyond adorable and it’s the perfect size for individual portions.  Love the ruffle detailing and the coral shade.

4. I will be making good use of this lovely All Clad Deluxe Slow Cooker from Williams Sonoma while the wind and rain cause a ruckus outside.  I don’t care if it’s still August, this gal will need to make some comfort food for the weekend and I think Pork Tinga or Short Ribs might be on the menu. I cannot say it enough – this slow cooker is one of my best culinary investments ever – next to my knives and my Le Creuset.

5. I already warned that this was going to be a “Canning in Stilettos” weekend – and I finally succumbed and added yet another canning book to my arsenal: The Art of Preserving from Williams-Sonoma Fab Friday Hurricane Irene Edition. I plan on making the Mixed Berry Jam, Dijon Style Mustard and maybe another recipe if all goes well – the Chipotle Ketchup looks like a viable option or should I go with the Cinnamon Applesauce? Hmmmmm – decisions decisions.

East Coasters – stay safe out there – This Irene gal is not one to play nice in the sandbox.  Hunker down and tell us what has you obsessed this weekend!

Obsessed With Le Creuset Bistro Round Grill And Griddle Set

Le Creuset Grill & Griddle Set

I swear if I add ONE more Le Creuset piece to my already stocked kitchen, well – I think my kitchen cabinets might revolt.  If I add two – let’s not even go there.  However, the minute I saw these lovelies in my email, I found myself trying to do a bit of “Creative Accounting” which I normally employ when it comes to my shoe purchases. But, since the Le Creuset Bistro Round Grill & Griddle set IS in my favorite color, Ocean, serves a useful purpose and doesn’t take up much more room – I might have to make an exception. Plus – I can save money if I purchase the set, versus individually – hmmmm….

Excuse me a moment while I go reallocate some funds and, ummm – try to keep the angry cabinets at bay.

The Cajun Rocket Pot–Simplifying Today’s Lobster and Crawfish Boils

pot-pic-3.jpg

While many of my friends know I’m a quasi-New England gal and have experienced my share of clam bakes & lobster boils, I also adore all things Cajun and Creole and have plans to go to NOLA this summer for the IFBC 2011.  One thing that is a must in New Orleans is a crawfish boil and this lovely contraption crossed my path.  While it’s called the Cajun Rocket Pot, it would make lightening fast work out of the often lengthy lobster boil. I could definitely see some of my New England friends and family making good use of this.  Plus – for restaurants – the value is beyond immense.  Heck, I was wishing that they had a smaller 8 qt. version because it took FOREVER to boil pasta water over the weekend and the base on a smaller version of these pots really would do wonders on a gas stove, no?

Check out the Cajun Rocket Pot HERE and, if you are planning to hold a few boils this spring/summer, check it out – time is priceless and for something to cut the work in half the time, well, that’s worth the investment in my book.

Fab Friday — Cooking In Stilettos Edition

The countdown is on and in two weeks, this gal will be enjoying the sights and sounds of sunny Miami while checking out the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival. Here are a few things that have me over the moon this week.

1. You know, Steve Madden is the king of “similarities” at a much lower cost than, let’s say, Brian Atwood. I immediately made a point to order these lovelies and they should be on my doorstep shortly after I return from Miami – what can I say, I’m a sucker for the detailing.

2. I am a Meyer Lemon addict and, if I didn’t kill EVERY plant I own, I might actually consider one or two of these Meyer Lemon Trees from Williams-Sonoma for the house.

3. I know I’m a Le Creuset gal but this Staub Mini-Cocotte has me totally enamored – I adore the turquoise color.

4. Amazon finally sent my Pretty Delicious: Lean and Lovely Recipes for a Healthy, Happy New You Fab Friday Cooking In Stilettos Edition cookbook by one of my fave stiletto gals, Candice Kumai and the photos – oh my heavens, they are stunning. The recipes are spot on and I will be posting a few in the coming weeks – my fave at the moment, the Apricot Chicken with Quinoa pilaf – delish!

5. Finally, on my local faves, I have to give some kudos to my boy Joe Zangie. During my “recovering publicist” days, I worked with Joe and I can’t even begin to tell you what a fab entertainer he is. Joe let me take a listen to this track “You Remind Me” when it was in its early stages and I knew then it was destined to be a hit. Now that it is finally released, I finally tell y’all about it. It is that *perfect* song that you will have stuck in your head for days. So, if you have a second, take a listen and support a local Philly artist icon smile Fab Friday Cooking In Stilettos Edition Congrats JZ!
