Thoughts On This Season of Food Network Star And Why I Won’t Watch

FNS-7

FNS 7 Thoughts On This Season of Food Network Star And Why I Wont WatchThe first season of Food Network’s “Next Food Network Star” had me at hello and, for the next few seasons, I would watch it without fail. Sure, I know the fans thought that some of the Food Network Celeb Chefs were being “harsh” in their criticisms but tv is a harsh business (hell, entertainment is hard – PERIOD!) I liked the concept, would roll my eyes appropriately at the “drama” that was edited for maximum dramatic impact and, all in all, enjoyed the show. There were a couple winners that had me a bit baffled, but I supported their efforts. There are some I actively rooted for (Chef Aaron for one), some that had some seriously good fashion sense that merits a nod of the stiletto (Serena Palumbo, Lisa Garza) and some that were SO passionate about their love for food and cooking that they also got their own shows even if they didn’t win (i.e. Kelsey Nixon, Jeffrey Saad, etc.)

The long and the short of it is – I enjoyed Next Food Network Star – until now.

On the night of the premiere, I was under deadline and set the DVR. Well, thanks to that lovely Pandora’s Box of Distraction – Twitter – I noticed that my timeline was even more active than usual about the newly branded “Food Network Star” aka #STAR. Hmmmm… what has everyone in a tizzy, I wondered. Apparently there was WAY more drama this season and people were loosing their minds over a few of the Cheftestants… so I resigned to put my writing to the side and see what the fuss was all about…

As expected, they go through the usual Cheftestant intros which, IMO, had even more ego fluffing than usual – some I was fully aware of and have noticed around the various challenges, etc and some had that desperate “Look at me! Pick Me!” type of look that could make a viewer wince in embarrassment. I went back to writing while keeping one eye on the screen and that’s when I saw it – a Cheftestant, Penny, decided that she was going to have a show “STILETTOS IN THE KITCHEN” – I about lost my daggone my mind and immediately deleted the show from the DVR. (Sidenote: I have had more than enough drama dealing with Cooking In Stilettos copycats and variations for some time now and have the headache to prove it. Do people NOT do their research??). One thing that really bothered me was that there already is a fab Stilettos In The Kitchen and you can even find her book, Stilettos in the Kitchen (The Modern Girl’s Guide to Being Domestic Goddess) Thoughts On This Season of Food Network Star And Why I Wont Watch, on Amazon. What the hell were the Food Network Producers thinking by not even researching?

After hearing quite a few comments the next day, someone forwarded me Penny’s Facebook Page and, lo and behold – no more Stilettos in The Kitchen – her Facebook page was called “CHEF IN STILETTOS.” Well, there already is a Stiletto Chef - Top Chef’s Candice Kumai (who can cook circles around Penny, be gracious, rock a KILLER stiletto and is far from snarky – thankyouverymuch!). All in all, the lack of originality on a culinary point of view just really pushed my buttons.

So, with all that I have heard from this season from musings from fans and friends alike, clearly, I am not missing much. 3 shows in and Penny is playing the role of villain to the hilt – (and c’mon – she can’t blame all of that on editing. It’s well known that the camera takes what you give, including your confessional diatribes. Viewers are not fooled). Listen – I’m fully aware that shows are edited for that dramatic factor (Real Housewives anyone?) but I also know that as more of these “shows” are put together, the concept of “reality” can be lost in translation. There are shows that are faux scripted, there are shows that have producers manipulating the outcome, and, yes, there are shows that have jumped the shark and lost all concept of reality. I can think of a plethora of other chefs that would have been great on Food Network Star, i.e. Bren of FlanboyantEats, Alex Lopez – the Food Diva, Jaden of Steamy Kitchen – way too many to mention!

So, for this season, I’m going to have to take a pass. I’ll get my recaps over at Food Network Humor and, perhaps, maybe the producers will think before they cast next season and look for more people that are “authentic” instead of drama queens.

Fab Friday Returns to Cooking In Stilettos

Ahh – we’re FINALLY back on schedule and the Fab Friday has returned… This is going to be quite the weekend as I have some really interesting culinary projects ahead, a friend’s 40th b’day celebration that is sure to bring back LOTS of 80s memories, great food, convo and cocktails, and some work to do on Cooking In Stilettos. What do they say – when you love what you do, then it’s not work at all icon smile Fab Friday Returns to Cooking In Stilettos

Here are a few things that have captivated me this week.

1. Speaking of the 80s, I swear, I should have whapped Kelly Ripa over the head YEARS ago because when she has a killer shoe, I’m like a wench on a mission. Way back when, she was one of the gals on the set of a certain show who always wore 3″ heels and of course, like typical teen gals, many followed suit, myself included. When people ask how I can wear heels so high, I partially blame Kelly since I’ve been wearing tee-tottering heights since I was 15. Now that I think about it – she wasn’t the only gal on the set who had some killer shoes – so did Princess aka Heather. Heather was wearing fab over the knee boots WELL before Kim Kardashian rocked that trend. Anyhow – let me stop flashing back to memory lane and deal with the shoes at hand. A couple weeks ago, Kel was rockin’ this seriously gorgeous Charlotte Olympia espadrille pump and, while it was cute, I don’t think I could EVER justify paying over $800 for a cotton shoe. However, when I saw these DV by Dolce Vita Florence Sandals in Nude, well – it was a win win. The nude ankle strap wouldn’t cut off the leg line and it was chic and perfect for this spring/summer 2011. Sorry Kelly – you can keep your Charlotte Olympias – I’ll stick with these lovelies – and I’ll even have some funds left over for perhaps a Le Creuset or three.

2. Ok – this Emile Henry canister set is gorgeous. Don’t get me wrong, I adore my glass and silver topped set that I’ve had since I was in Orlando but this has such a streamlined look that would be perfect for my one day copper and teal kitchen.

3. I am really enjoying this quinoa kick that I am on – and when I saw this Zursun Black Quinoa at Williams Sonoma, well, I’m intrigued. Has anyone ever tried Black Quinoa?

4. I have been flipping through Aaron McCargo Jr.’s book Simply Done, Well Done Fab Friday Returns to Cooking In Stilettos for a hot minute now and have flagged some recipes to try here on Cooking In Stilettos. I can’t commend Aaron enough – not many peeps know this but back when he had a resto in Camden – I happened to be in town for a meeting and our former producer took us there for lunch and the food was slammin’! When he won NFNS – I was thrilled because the man can cook and, quite honestly, he’s a really really nice guy! So, if you see this out and about, pick up a copy – it’s well worth it! Congrats Chef!

5. Jen at One Curly Fry sent me a link to COOK by Audrey Claire and I almost fell out of my chair this morning. It is opening this summer at the corner of Rittenhouse and 20th St. and it’s going to offer classes, a boutique, a bookstore and more. Plus – the kitchen is supposed to be state of the art. Ummm – where do I sigh up? Looking forward to great things coming from COOK!

Set The DVR: Kelsey Nixon To Debut New Show On Cooking Channel

CC-KelseysEssentials

Kelsey Nixon has long been a “fan favorite” among Next Food Network Star fans and I, for one, was thrilled to hear that she was getting her own show on the Cooking Channel – Kelsey’s Essentials.

From the Cooking Channel Website:

Kelsey Nixon’s got spunk, she’s got sass, but most importantly, she’s got what you so desperately need in the kitchen: The Essentials. From “Roasting” to “Sauce-Making” to “Quick Breads,” Kelsey shows you — the DIY home cook — the essential techniques, equipment and foolproof tips you need to be the boss of your own kitchen. Kelsey is all about using the basics to create dishes that are anything but ordinary.

Kelsey’s Essentials premieres this Saturday, November 6th at 2:30 p.m. EST and the first episode is geared towards “Fresh Pasta” (Side note, wait – wasn’t that on my 2010 culinary goals list?).

Cooking In Stilettos had the opportunity to chat with Kelsey at the New York City Wine & Food Festival and, from what I hear, this is going to be one show you don’t want to miss.

Question to the Readers: Next Food Network Star…

QuestionMark thumb1 Question to the Readers: Next Food Network Star... Last week it was all about the Top Chef; this week it’s onto the Food Network version – Next Food Network Star.  Is anyone watching this and, if so, what are your thoughts so far?

Personally, I’ve approached it with a tinge of bitterness since my fave chef blogger, Bren of Flanboyant Eats didn’t make the final cut.  This season, IMO, has had too much drama and way too much crying.  However, I am excited to see John Besh & Marcus Samuelsson as part of the dinner party attendees for next week’s episode.  I have to say this much, I knew something was up when I saw Marcus at the SOBE Food & Wine Festival with Food Network peeps in attendance.

I wonder – is he headed over to Food Network and departing BET?

The Second NFNS Finalist Gets The Boot…

One of the things I look forward to every week is the commentary after this week’s Next Food Network Star on FNDish from Amateur Gourmet’s Adam and FN’s own Sunny Anderson (joined by her bro, Drew, who seems to favor Ms. Lisa). Sunny had some great tips re: poaching eggs (something that I have YET to master) and some insight on what really should have went down. They should let Adam and Sunny judge on of the eps next season (just my opinion).

And, yes, for now, my vote is for Philly fave, Aaron (and shush – don’t call me biased but yes, I think he can cook like a fiend).

Check out their commentary below.

Recap: Next Food Network Star from FNDish…

The Amateur Gourmet’s Adam Roberts and FN Star Sunny Anderson have some great commentary on last night’s episode.

Check it out.

Sunny, chica – get out of my head. Last night I dubbed Lisa “Posh” and leave it to you to call out “The Neck” done Nipa Style. I will say this, I liked everyone’s recaps, both on FN Dish and on the blogs, the most. And, of course, I got a kick out of the guest judges, especially Morimoto & Giada.

What did you think of last night’s episode? Did you watch?
