Busy Busy Bee — Philly Is Dancin On Air

DPUSA-AMC-OnTheSet-1988-GDC-2

DPUSA AMC OnTheSet 1988 GDC 2 150x150 Busy Busy Bee Philly Is Dancin On AirLife has taken quite the turn – moreso than usual. Of course I have the daily 9to9, but have been wrapped up with Wigg’s new medical developments (they found a growth they need to biopsy – fun fun! He’s going to be a surgery regular at his vet hospital at this rate) and cooking for me hasn’t been as much of a priority as it has been cooking for him. The dog goes through about 5 pounds of chicken a week – let’s not even calculate the amount of rice that has to be made. Anywhoo, as I was saying, it’s been a busy summer here for this gal. Any cooking I have done, it’s either been recipes I have already spotlighted here that I can whip up in a jiffy or items for friends’ parties and BBQs.

I do have a bit of an off-topic event that has been consuming my attention for the past few weeks. For many Philly peeps, the town has been all abuzz about the Dancin’ on Air Marathon that is set to run on PHL17. For those of you not familiar with Dancin’ on Air, well, it was a regional show that was filmed locally in Philly during the 80s which eventually went national under the name Dance Party USA. Pretty much, Dancin’ on Air (and, in turn, Dance Party USA) is looked upon fondly in this part of the woods. I can’t tell you how many people tell me that they had a cousin, brother, sister, mother, neighbor dance on the show. As I often joke that my days on the set of Dance Party helped hone my PR skills (I hated being on camera), my days on set gave me a family of friends that I treasure to this day.

A (huge) group of former dancers headed to PHL17′s studios a couple weeks ago to tape retrospectives of their memories and time on the set, lessons learned, funny stories and it was like one huge catch-up fest. Granted many of us get together for birthdays, weddings, home again parties, cocktails, etc. but this time we saw faces that I can say I haven’t seen in 20+ years. It was so good to catch up in those hallways and on the studio stage of PHL17 – so many memories from being “pulled” (when we weren’t allowed to dance on set because of some infraction of some sort – talking, gum chewing, attitude, looking at the camera too much), “roll call” and just getting reacquainted with the camera (and for those that know me KNOW I detest that daggone camera! *LOL*)

So, with PHL17 airing 4 vintage eps of Dancin’ on Air from their vaults, you know we had to pull out the stops. The Piazza at Schmidts with the Dancin’ on Air and Dance Party USA Alumni is hosting a “Viewing Party” in Northern Liberties on Saturday, July 23, 2011 from 8 – 10 and there will be so many familiar faces from shows past. It’s going to be a GREAT time and we’ve been basically running ourselves ragged planning it. I have to give major kudos to Romeo, Annette, Liz, “Princess” and Niecy for giving this their all icon smile Busy Busy Bee Philly Is Dancin On Air They are a dream team I’m thrilled to work with and I’m seriously looking forward to tomorrow’s festivities. I’m hearing its the “talk of the town”.

So – those in Philly – c’mon on down and watch some vintage eps with us!   I’m hearing there might even be a little Madonna in the mix (and some Duran Duran – who knew.  I wonder – was The Roving Stove’s Julie Anne on the Dancin’ on Air set way back then?  Small. World!)

And, for those that wanted to know about the “Rules” check out this “reflection” courtesy of PHL17!

Sunny Anderson Showcases Fab 4th of July Sides On GMA

With the 4th of July fast approaching, Food Network’s  Sunny Anderson showcased some delish side dishes on Good Morning America this morning, including her Easy Baked Beans, Summer Corn Salad and a creamy Potato and Prosciutto Salad.   Well, that corn salad will be on the menu this weekend and, possibly, the baked beans. While the Barefoot Contessa had a good recipe for baked beans, I have to confess, it seemed somewhat daunting to this gal.  Sunny’s recipe seems super simple and won’t have me grabbing multiple ingredients, soaking beans for hours all while stumbling over the Sous Pug who will camp his happy behind by the stove hoping for a piece of bacon to fall.

Oh – before I forget – DVR Alert! Sunny’s All American Celebration will be airing on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.  and July 4th at 6 p.m. on the Food Network.  Check out the description from Food Network:

Sunny Anderson shows us that behind every great soldier is a good meal! It’s a very special personal and patriotic journey for Sunny as she travels to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and Fort Lee, Virginia to look back on her time in the military, celebrate our men and women in uniform, reconnect with her active duty family members, and show us why food is often the glue that holds military families together.

Way to go Sunny!

What’s on your menu for the 4th of July?

The Demise Of An American Institution — The Soap Opera

all-my-children-logo

all my children logo 150x150 The Demise Of An American Institution The Soap OperaThroughout my lifetime, there have always been one constant – the soap opera. How many times did I race home from school to see what was going on with Erika Kane and her one of many husbands, or to see what drama was befalling Luke & Laura and those crazy storylines that seemed so far-fetched but appealed to many.

So, when I read that ABC has cancelled All My Children and One Life To Live to replace them with a show called “THE CHEW (and, sidenote, another called The Revolution), I about lost my mind. Seriously ABC – are you 14 days late for April Fools? Now, don’t get me wrong, I adore Top Chef’s Carla Hall, Iron Chef Michael Symon, Clinton Kelly and even that orange clogged wonder, Mario Batali but there is no way ABC could seriously think about putting Batali and Crew in La Lucci’s Louboutins (or her timeslot!)

All My Children has been one of those iconic shows that has been like a comfy blanket. Even though I didn’t always need it – I knew it was there. One Life To Live – eehh – I just couldn’t get into it (Hello – umm.. didn’t they go to the middle of the earth or something?) but All My Children had GREAT storylines, of course our gal Kel got her national acting chops on it (we won’t discuss Ms. Ripa’s Partyline Commercial – and I’m saying ACTING chops – not DANCING chops – okay Big Brother?), and the fashion – oh my heavens, the fashion. All My Children also played host to a number of guest stars (Elizabeth Taylor and Carol Burnett are two that come to mind immediately) and how many well known actors got their start in the soaps. So, when I read that ABC is going to basically do a chef/lifestyle centered “VIEW” called “CHEW” in lieu of an American icon? Seriously ABC – I’m disappointed…

Now, with these cancellations, what’s going to happen to SoapNet – or will we get another variation of Food Network or some mess *sigh* Oh – ABC – if you cancel General Hospital - well then, I might just have to forget that ABC ceases to exist, no matter what the show is.  Consider yourself warned.

What do you think – was ABC right in cancelling All My Children & One Life To Live?  Will you be watching CHEW?

Donatella Arpaia Simplifies Pasta On The Today Show

Remember that incessant culinary goal of mine to learn how to make pasta?  Well, this morning on the Today Show, I happened to catch the tail end of Donatella Arpaia teaching Meredith Vieira how to make homemade cavatelli and, after seeing this, I have come to the realization that it really isn’t that difficult.   Even the recipes showcased seem simple.  Hmmm… If we get another snow day, I sense a kitchen experiment in the works.

Set The DVR: Kelsey Nixon To Debut New Show On Cooking Channel

CC-KelseysEssentials

Kelsey Nixon has long been a “fan favorite” among Next Food Network Star fans and I, for one, was thrilled to hear that she was getting her own show on the Cooking Channel – Kelsey’s Essentials.

From the Cooking Channel Website:

Kelsey Nixon’s got spunk, she’s got sass, but most importantly, she’s got what you so desperately need in the kitchen: The Essentials. From “Roasting” to “Sauce-Making” to “Quick Breads,” Kelsey shows you — the DIY home cook — the essential techniques, equipment and foolproof tips you need to be the boss of your own kitchen. Kelsey is all about using the basics to create dishes that are anything but ordinary.

Kelsey’s Essentials premieres this Saturday, November 6th at 2:30 p.m. EST and the first episode is geared towards “Fresh Pasta” (Side note, wait – wasn’t that on my 2010 culinary goals list?).

Cooking In Stilettos had the opportunity to chat with Kelsey at the New York City Wine & Food Festival and, from what I hear, this is going to be one show you don’t want to miss.
