Stop Shkoff Rewind For A Good Cause With The Bitchin Kitchen Crew

We interrupt the 12 Days of Giftmas to bring a little levity to your holiday playlist all for a good cause, of course.  Nadia G. and the Bitchin’ Kitchen crew have done it again with a killer comedy holiday tune and video, A Bitchin’ Christmas, that will have you putting it on repeat. I mean, when you hear “It’s Christmas Time.  Let’s Drink Some Wine!” – how can you not sing along, right?

A Bitchin’ Christmas features cameos from foodie faves like Andrew Zimmern, Kelsey Nixon, Alie & Georgia, Guy Fieri and more along with hijinks from Panos, Hans and The Spice Agent who give a whole new meaning to the term “Carolers”.  Plus, when you purchase A Bitchin Christmas from iTunes, you are benefiting Meals on Wheels.  Purchasing with a purpose – now that’s the holiday spirit!

So, grab that ugly sweater, stop, shkoff, rewind and support a great cause!

Nigella Lawson Visits The Today Show And A Regis and Kelly Flashback

You know it’s not a holiday season until Nigella Lawson visits the Today Show, and, like last year, Nigella was in the Today Show kitchen showing Matt and Ann one of her favorite dishes – Lone Linguine with Truffle Oil as well as a few others.

I always joke that if there was ONE cookbook in my collection I would have to save (besides my Bampa’s cookbook), it would be my signed copy of Nigella Kitchen. I remember the first time I saw Nigella Lawson, it was on the Style Network and she made cooking look easy. I had just gotten out of a majorly horrid 7 year relationship with he who shall not be named (who insisted that I couldn’t even boil water let alone cook) and, after watching her series as well as shows from Colin Cowie and G. Garvin, I finally mustered up the courage to find my way around a kitchen. I credit them with helping me find my passion for cooking and entertaining and set me on the path I am on today.

Last year for my birthday, I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Lawson when she visited Philly and she was just so encouraging. What you see is what you get and she makes no apologies. Her book, Nigella Kitchen, is stocked full of recipes that, IMO should be in every home cook’s kitchen arsenal.  So, this morning, I was excited to see that she was on the Today Show showing a few recipes from one of my favorite cookbooks (and sidenote, Nigella – I hope you dropped by and saw Regis as well for his last week on Live! – you were clearly one of his favorite chefs).  It was a nice way to brighten up a dreary rainy Philly morning…

Cooking School Is In Session With Sherri Shepherd, Nate Berkus and Aaron McCargo, Jr.

I feel bad for my poor neighbors last night and have to apologize for the hysterical laughter coming from the house.   I was watching a DVR’d ep of The Nate Show and The View’s own  Sherri Shepherd was his co-host.   Not only are they a hoot together, but the producers decided that it was time for “Cooking School.”

Now if any of you watch either The Nate Show or The View, you know that both Nate and Sherri have admitted that cooking is not their forte.  Well, one of my fave FN peeps, Aaron McCargo Jr. decided to attempt to teach them how to cook Filet Mignon and Bananas Foster with a little flambe’ action.   Be prepared to laugh hysterically and, yes, Sherri does indeed “Cook In Stilettos.” Well done!

Happy Birthday Julia Child

Image via Wikipedia

Sometimes I think that my brain has escaped and my memory is just not quite there lately. Thankfully, Sur La Table reminded me that today is a day of celebration – Julia Child’s birthday. Even when I couldn’t cook, I would watch her PBS show and marvel at how she made things accessible for today’s home cook. Even on her press appearances, her razor sharp wit was evident – check out this appearance on the David Letterman show in the late 80s where she just rolled with the punches. What a gem.

Tonight, I have plans to leaf through Mastering the Art of French Cooking – Vol. 1 and 2 Happy Birthday Julia Child with a nice glass of wine. It’s amazing how Julia Child changed the landscape for food television and, for that, I say “Thank You!”

Busy Busy Bee — Philly Is Dancin On Air

DPUSA-AMC-OnTheSet-1988-GDC-2

DPUSA AMC OnTheSet 1988 GDC 2 150x150 Busy Busy Bee Philly Is Dancin On AirLife has taken quite the turn – moreso than usual. Of course I have the daily 9to9, but have been wrapped up with Wigg’s new medical developments (they found a growth they need to biopsy – fun fun! He’s going to be a surgery regular at his vet hospital at this rate) and cooking for me hasn’t been as much of a priority as it has been cooking for him. The dog goes through about 5 pounds of chicken a week – let’s not even calculate the amount of rice that has to be made. Anywhoo, as I was saying, it’s been a busy summer here for this gal. Any cooking I have done, it’s either been recipes I have already spotlighted here that I can whip up in a jiffy or items for friends’ parties and BBQs.

I do have a bit of an off-topic event that has been consuming my attention for the past few weeks. For many Philly peeps, the town has been all abuzz about the Dancin’ on Air Marathon that is set to run on PHL17. For those of you not familiar with Dancin’ on Air, well, it was a regional show that was filmed locally in Philly during the 80s which eventually went national under the name Dance Party USA. Pretty much, Dancin’ on Air (and, in turn, Dance Party USA) is looked upon fondly in this part of the woods. I can’t tell you how many people tell me that they had a cousin, brother, sister, mother, neighbor dance on the show. As I often joke that my days on the set of Dance Party helped hone my PR skills (I hated being on camera), my days on set gave me a family of friends that I treasure to this day.

A (huge) group of former dancers headed to PHL17′s studios a couple weeks ago to tape retrospectives of their memories and time on the set, lessons learned, funny stories and it was like one huge catch-up fest. Granted many of us get together for birthdays, weddings, home again parties, cocktails, etc. but this time we saw faces that I can say I haven’t seen in 20+ years. It was so good to catch up in those hallways and on the studio stage of PHL17 – so many memories from being “pulled” (when we weren’t allowed to dance on set because of some infraction of some sort – talking, gum chewing, attitude, looking at the camera too much), “roll call” and just getting reacquainted with the camera (and for those that know me KNOW I detest that daggone camera! *LOL*)

So, with PHL17 airing 4 vintage eps of Dancin’ on Air from their vaults, you know we had to pull out the stops. The Piazza at Schmidts with the Dancin’ on Air and Dance Party USA Alumni is hosting a “Viewing Party” in Northern Liberties on Saturday, July 23, 2011 from 8 – 10 and there will be so many familiar faces from shows past. It’s going to be a GREAT time and we’ve been basically running ourselves ragged planning it. I have to give major kudos to Romeo, Annette, Liz, “Princess” and Niecy for giving this their all icon smile Busy Busy Bee Philly Is Dancin On Air They are a dream team I’m thrilled to work with and I’m seriously looking forward to tomorrow’s festivities. I’m hearing its the “talk of the town”.

So – those in Philly – c’mon on down and watch some vintage eps with us!   I’m hearing there might even be a little Madonna in the mix (and some Duran Duran – who knew.  I wonder – was The Roving Stove’s Julie Anne on the Dancin’ on Air set way back then?  Small. World!)

And, for those that wanted to know about the “Rules” check out this “reflection” courtesy of PHL17!

Nate Berkus Gets An Insiders View Of The Darby With Alex Guarnaschelli

The Darby - Nate and Chef Alex in the Kitchen

Darby NateChefAlex Kitchen 150x150 Nate Berkus Gets An Insiders View Of The Darby With Alex Guarnaschelli During the New York City Wine & Food Festival, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to attend a master cooking class with Food Network’s Chef Alex Guarnaschelli which was held at New York City’s hottest supper club, The Darby. As you may know, Chef Guarnaschelli is not only the executive chef at Butter, but also is at the helm of The Darby. In my opinion, this master cooking class was one of the highlights of festival and I can’t even begin to tell you how it affected my cooking. Having the opportunity to learn from Chef Guarnaschelli is one of those experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime. Not only is she kind and gracious, she’s a phenomenal chef and teacher.

The Darby was a showstopper as well. I have to tell you – when you see the interior of the restaurant, be prepared to pick your jaw up off of the floor – the chandeliers alone are breathtaking! No detail was overlooked.  From the deep red interior, the ceiling detailing, the plates and seltzer bottles and, especially, the menu.  The Darby has a vibe that brings you back in time to days where socialites and stylishly suited men socialized while enjoying a cocktail (or three!)

Nate Berkus recently visited The Darby to get an insider’s view from Chef Guarnaschelli and even visited the kitchen to whip up her Waldorf Salad (ahhh – now that is a retro recipe!) and took some amazing pics!   Nate always knows how to pick a stylish spot!

Sunny Anderson Showcases Fab 4th of July Sides On GMA

With the 4th of July fast approaching, Food Network’s  Sunny Anderson showcased some delish side dishes on Good Morning America this morning, including her Easy Baked Beans, Summer Corn Salad and a creamy Potato and Prosciutto Salad.   Well, that corn salad will be on the menu this weekend and, possibly, the baked beans. While the Barefoot Contessa had a good recipe for baked beans, I have to confess, it seemed somewhat daunting to this gal.  Sunny’s recipe seems super simple and won’t have me grabbing multiple ingredients, soaking beans for hours all while stumbling over the Sous Pug who will camp his happy behind by the stove hoping for a piece of bacon to fall.

Oh – before I forget – DVR Alert! Sunny’s All American Celebration will be airing on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.  and July 4th at 6 p.m. on the Food Network.  Check out the description from Food Network:

Sunny Anderson shows us that behind every great soldier is a good meal! It’s a very special personal and patriotic journey for Sunny as she travels to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and Fort Lee, Virginia to look back on her time in the military, celebrate our men and women in uniform, reconnect with her active duty family members, and show us why food is often the glue that holds military families together.

Way to go Sunny!

What’s on your menu for the 4th of July?
