Life Moves Pretty Fast – Why Not #IndulgeAnytime

Cookbooks-And-Coffee

These past few months (and especially recently) have been a whirlwind between the Sous Pug, the 9to9, family issues, etc.  More and more, I’ve started to live by the Ferris Bueller mantra:

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” ~ Ferris Bueller

Who knew that, over 20 years later, an offhand quote in an 80s flick would make so much sense to us now in this crazy busy world.  I mean, everyone is on their phones, iPads, computers – working is not just 9to5, it’s much more than that.  We’re running from Point A to Point B, sometimes forgetting to stop at Point D and everyone is on the go, constantly.  Don’t even get me started on the craziness of the holiday season.  We are often so busy giving of ourselves to others that we don’t take care of ourselves – even if it’s for five minutes.  I can tell you that since the Sous Pug has gotten sick, “me time” has taken a backseat – between vet appointments, glucose tests, pill cocktails and his home cooked diet – it’s exhausting.

When I can’t recharge my batteries, I turn into a shrew from the utter bowels of hell so I’ve made it a priority to take a few minutes for myself daily away from the phone and the computer.  One of my favorite things to do is to grab a cup of coffee, a good cookbook and leaf through it – getting inspiration for future posts & dishes, learning about new ingredients and techniques and while I do enjoy the occasional novel or Jen Lancaster book, it’s cookbooks that take up every inch of my bookshelves and I won’t tell you how many that are on my iPad. Coffee and I have had this torrid love affair ever since I can remember – I remember swiping my dad’s coffee when I was little, my mom always had an ice coffee at the ready and, when I was old enough to drive, I would run to the local Dunkin’ and get my own.  However, I can’t make coffee to save my life.  I’ve tried – valiantly – had a few “non-swill” moments with some coffee from the Italian Market but no matter what I did, it still came out tasting like cop coffee – horrid!

One vital kitchen tool that helps me recharge:  my Keurig Vue.  I swear – out of the kitchen items I bought this year, this has to be one of my favorites.  No more “cop coffee” in this household and I have been making less visits to the local coffeehouse.  I have a number of coffee pods that I enjoy but some of my favorites are from the Cafe Escapes line, especially the Cafe Caramel (perfect for my caramel macchiato cravings) and the Dark Cocoa in the evenings.  Sprinkled with a bit of cinnamon (and a dash of tequila if you are so inclined) and you can escape to a corner of the room, curl up with a good (cook)book and just relax.

The Vue was one of the wisest things I invested in this year – even more than a sassy pair of stilettos (just don’t tell my shoe arsenal that ;) )

I have been looking at these for a while….I am not sure yeat since I and 2 other household member drink a lot of coffee if it would be a cost savings to the household.

It really depends – I tend to use a cost per use theory compared to getting coffee out. When I’d make a pot (and it was swill), I could only drink a cup or so and the rest would be wasted. It wound up being well worth it for my wallet. Plus – if you register at Keurig, you get 10% off of the coffee and other perks too :) If you do buy it – make sure to use coupons and cash back if possible – it helps with the sting.

Well, I don’t drink coffee at all but I do lose myself in word games and relax daily. I have an occasional tea or hot chocolate to drink and enjoy a good book too. I think it is all about having a balanced life emotionally, physically and spiritually. I go to church and have a personal relationship with Jesus.

I don’t have a Keurig but I would like to. To treat myself I make coffee and curl up with a good book and my cat on my lap…

When I need to escape, or just chill out and relax, I pour myself a cup of Cafe Escapes, and gather the family around the table for board games. Nothing is more relaxing, or fun, to me than having the whole family together, indulging in a little Cafe Caramel, or Hot Chocolate for the kids, especially on those cold, winter evenings.
