One of my biggest kitchen issues (besides the dreaded pantry), is organizing my fridge and freezer. My fridge is often packed full of ingredients, condiments galore and, yes, there’s a whole SousPug section. (The pug has his own area for his chicken, pasta, melon and his favorite cheese.) It’s a balancing act and in dire need of an intervention.
The other night, I went to grab the SousPug’s pasta and chicken out of the fridge and, as if in slow motion, the glass storage container that held his cooked pasta fell to the floor and shattered in a million pieces. We’re talking glass everywhere – from the fridge to the sink as well as glass fragments in the laundry room and on the dining room rug. It was an utter nightmare (and treacherous to boot). The evil minx came out to inspect and it was bedlam – trying to keep Mr. Magoo aka SousPug and the cat away from the glass fragments, trying to sweep up everything with the pasta and glass mixed and all while trying to make sure the contents of the fridge didn’t fall into the chaos. Oh – and trying to not step on anything (which didn’t work – ouch!). I think you got the visual.
This morning, the Today Show’s lifestyle expert, Elizabeth Mayhew, came to the (virtual) rescue with a spotlight on how to best organize your fridge which, in turn, helps make food last longer. She has no idea how timely this is and, guess what is on the agenda this week – a total fridge (and freezer overhaul) and I can finally use my Fridge Binz that I bought eons ago but haven’t implemented (except the SousPug’s “cheese tray“). In a nutshell, it’s all about “location location location” and there are a plethora of great tips that will take your fridge from chaos to sanity in a few short minutes.

Keeping an organized fridge is one of my (many) compulsions. I know – it’s weird – but I have a place for everything and everything *must* be in its place. Just ask my hubby. It kinda drives him crazy. One of the things I use to organize smaller items is baskets! Yes, baskets. They actually work very well in the fridge. The cold doesn’t hurt them and they help corral those little bity jars of condiments, etc.
