A Recipe For Spicy Smoky S’Mores To Kick Off Cinco De Mayo

Spicy Smoky S'mores

I love Cinco de Mayo – the flavors, the fun and plenty of margaritas are a must in my book.  While I know that my favorite Pork Tinga is on the menu for tonight, also these lovely s'mores are the perfect way to cap off a wonderful evening.  You have the spicy smoky flavor of the chipotle with the warmth of the cinnamon that sets these s'mores apart from all the rest. One of my fave PR pros, Robin Caldwell, gave me a heads up about the fabulousness that is the Nate Berkus Show some time … [Read more...]

Learning From My Mistakes And A Tried and True From Anne Thornton

Cheddar Cheese Apple Pie

I had quite the baking doozy over the holidays.  I decided to step out of my comfort zone and make Anne Thornton's Cheddar Cheese Apple Pie from scratch.  Not many people know this but my favorite way to eat apples is with a bit of sharp cheddar – the flavors just work SO well together. So, I took my spiffy new Emile Henry Artisan Ruffled Pie Dish out of it's safe nook in the cupboard, prepped my ingredients, broke out my lovely marble pastry board and rolling pin and decided that even I … [Read more...]

It’s A Blueberry Crumb Cake Type Of Day…

BC-BlueberryCrumbCake-Final_thumb.jpg

Ever have one of those days where you just are feelin' "mehhhhhhh" and just want to burrow back into the pillows and head back to dreamland?  Well, that was me today.  Between the travel, constantly refereeing the furballs, the incessantly ever growing to-do list and lots of other things that are snappin' at my stilettos, I just wanted to pull the covers over my head and hide. However, I knew that I had plans to attempt baking in stilettos again – this time with the Barefoot Contessa's … [Read more...]

The Bachelor Baffles Me. The Barefoot Contessa Does Not.

Blueberry Coffee Cake Muffins - Final

Correction, it's not just The Bachelor - most of reality tv baffles me.  I'm the type of gal who can't watch a movie such as Dumb & Dumber because I don't have patience for people acting without common sense.  I have trouble watching reality "dating" shows because a) we all know that their version of "reality" is *ahem* a tad far from that and b) where else where you see so many damn people professing their "love" for someone within a few days of meeting them, ya know?  I also can't stand … [Read more...]

Whats Cookin In Western Mass: Apple Creme Tart

This month's What's Cookin! at Western Mass Women Magazine was a fun one.  While I would like to think I'm a great cook, it's the baking that can often throw me for a loop. Baking requires such precision, concentration - hell, it means I have to pay attention and not get sidetracked.  Do you know how hard that can be?  Knowing my baking "challenges", I tend to gravitate towards recipes that are simple and straightforward, including this gorgeous Apple Creme Tart that I adapted from a Laura … [Read more...]

A little birdie gave me a killer tidbit about a fab bakeware sale at Williams Sonoma that is running through this Sunday, September 26, 2010. This is one heck of a sale - basically 15% off here. Tried and True: Marcus Samuelsson’s Apple Cake

Marcus Samuelsson Apple Cake

I can't begin to tell you how sick I've been the entire week.  Getting readjusted to the Northern Chill has been quite the experience for this formerly stuck in Florida gal.  So, the gift guides will resume tomorrow and over the weekend - just in time for you to hurry for that last minute shopping... However, I wanted to put this recipe on your radar.  I adore the magazine House Beautiful - after all, Ina Garten does write for it.  Besides getting design inspiration for my new abode, the … [Read more...]

Tried and True: Giada’s Spice Cake

Spice Cake

Well, the recipe title technically is "HALLOWEEN SPICE CAKE" but, for sake of the holidays, let's just call it "Giada's Spice Cake" shall we? I saw this on a Halloween episode and what intrigued me was the use of applesauce in the recipe.  This was also the cake that taught me that my oven continuously runs 25 degrees below what is displayed.  Definitely taught me a few things about baking.  I do have to say that this was moist and flavorful - definitely a year round spice cake rather than … [Read more...]
