Throughout my lifetime, there have always been one constant – the soap opera. How many times did I race home from school to see what was going on with Erika Kane and her one of many husbands, or to see what drama was befalling Luke & Laura and those crazy storylines that seemed so far-fetched but appealed to many.
So, when I read that ABC has cancelled All My Children and One Life To Live to replace them with a show called “THE CHEW“ (and, sidenote, another called The Revolution), I about lost my mind. Seriously ABC – are you 14 days late for April Fools? Now, don’t get me wrong, I adore Top Chef’s Carla Hall, Iron Chef Michael Symon, Clinton Kelly and even that orange clogged wonder, Mario Batali but there is no way ABC could seriously think about putting Batali and Crew in La Lucci’s Louboutins (or her timeslot!)
All My Children has been one of those iconic shows that has been like a comfy blanket. Even though I didn’t always need it – I knew it was there. One Life To Live – eehh – I just couldn’t get into it (Hello – umm.. didn’t they go to the middle of the earth or something?) but All My Children had GREAT storylines, of course our gal Kel got her national acting chops on it (we won’t discuss Ms. Ripa’s Partyline Commercial – and I’m saying ACTING chops – not DANCING chops – okay Big Brother?), and the fashion – oh my heavens, the fashion. All My Children also played host to a number of guest stars (Elizabeth Taylor and Carol Burnett are two that come to mind immediately) and how many well known actors got their start in the soaps. So, when I read that ABC is going to basically do a chef/lifestyle centered “VIEW” called “CHEW” in lieu of an American icon? Seriously ABC – I’m disappointed…
Now, with these cancellations, what’s going to happen to SoapNet – or will we get another variation of Food Network or some mess *sigh* Oh – ABC – if you cancel General Hospital - well then, I might just have to forget that ABC ceases to exist, no matter what the show is. Consider yourself warned.
What do you think – was ABC right in cancelling All My Children & One Life To Live? Will you be watching CHEW?

Let me be the first to say this, I am sorry for your loss.
That being said, the writing was on the walls, viewer ship is way down, costs are way up to produce 5 hours of scripted tv a week, and it's cheaper to put on a crap talk show then pay for the soaps to be produced. The fate of GH will be interesting depending on what ABC finally comes up with in the end to fill 2 hours of daytime TV.
As for Soapnet – it's already toast and scheduled to turn into Disney Junior, a 24-hour network for preschoolers and their families Jan 2012. Isn't that exciting?
Good news is that Food Network and the Cooking Chanel announced today that there are adding 29 new shows and 22 are returning!
Think of it this way, now there is more room for your show (cause you know you have to do it!!!) Cooking in Stilettos – the show launch date Fall 2012?
I too will miss Erica, but not Viki… not that I watch!
*LOL* Tim – you are way too sweet! I see your point with the craptastic talk show costs v. scripted. I think I’m just way over this whole reality tv/talk show tv mess *sigh* And Disney Junior – oh lordy!
I saw the FN/CC show announcements and while I’m applauding a couple, there are some that make me want to stomp my stiletto and go “Really Food Network – REALLY?” Then again – I’m not surprised – its all about ratings, product placement and all that fine mess.
Now – if OWN or Bravo calls, well then – I’ll reconsider my “no tv ban” – however, they better have a Louboutin/Le Creuset budget – and I think I need you and Jim would have to be there! Just, let’s make sure the set has no risers
