It’s been a pretty tough six months – between the Sous Pug’s multiple diagnoses, switching to a new (and fabulous vet) who finally figured out what was wrong, to major surgery for both his bladder stones and pancreatitis, and now we’re prepping for Surgery No. 2.
Yup, you heard that right – the Sous Pug is getting ready for his second (and hopefully the LAST) surgery of the year (or hopefully EVER! I just want him happy and healthy). His uber fabulous vet recently discovered not one but two suspicious growths (or tumors) in his mouth that will need to be removed that are giving me quite the scare. She has told me that she thinks that they are benign as she has seen growths like that before. Add to that the fact that Wiggs has started to go blind and I’ve become a firm believer of “when it rains, it pours.”
The blind diagnosis (technically – Progressive Retinal Degeneration) pretty much came out of left field and we didn’t see it coming (no pun intended). In his defense, he was so sick, it took some time for his immune system to get back to full speed and these two issues just took hold when he was at his weakest.
Wiggs’ quality of life has not gone downhill at all – as a matter of fact, he’s been dealing with it quite well. He’s got a vet approved home-cooked diet of “pork and pasta” that has him turning into quite the tyrant of “feed me now”. Don’t even get me started on his demands for “banana ice cream” (basically pureed banana that’s frozen ala LaPhemmePhoodie), lots of watermelon and the fact I have to learn how to make homemade banana chips since he can’t have the commercial ones. He’s got the life of Riley – let me tell you and he can do a mean Stevie Wonder impersonation when he’s trying to play people to get food. This is one smart mutt.
However, I do need to retrain him on a few things, rearrange the apartment in a more “blind pug friendly” manner, do lots of research on behavior of blind dogs and pray for massive doses of patience, but I have faith. So, if posting seems sporadic, now you know the whole kit and kaboodle. If you can, please send good thoughts to Wiggs’ – he promises to send virtual pug hugs

Aaaawwww poor Wigg-ese baby. That is so sad he is going blind. He is so lucky to have you in his life. You are so wonderful for doing all you can to make him happy and comfortable. I hope that this 2nd surgery is his last and that he will recover quickly.
Sharon – if he touches the stilettos, he’s in trouble *LOL* but thank you! Rescuing this little guy was one of the best decisions I made.
Oh my goodness, I just found your blog and read about your little puggie! I have a three year old pug named Wendell who is my baby! I cannot imagine the stress, worry, and sadness you have been going through. I will keep Wiggs in my prayers and Wendell sends a big kiss to him!
Thanks so much Ashley! Give Wendell a big hug from me please!
I can so relate! Al has developed a mass – not like cancer, just an irritated spot – on his eye and will need surgery soon so as not to go blind. This is after his fractured clavicle and recurring giardiasis when he was a puppy, and IBS/hyper food sensitivity that leaves only like one food in the world he can eat. I will definitely keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. (Alouysius will, too.)
OH NO! Will keep Al in our thoughts and prayers. Please keep me updated. Pugs are quite the sensitive pups, aren’t they?
Awww. He is so cute, what an adorable picture. Sending lots of good thoughts your way that all goes well with the surgery!
Thanks Jennifer!!! That pic is one of my new faves – his foster mom had a some great ones – he loves to mouth a toy – why I don’t know but eehhhh… *LOL* Thanks for dropping by!
He’s so cute. I love him. Hope all goes well! XO
